We all remember the fantastic crash and burn of Google Video before it gave up and just bought Youtube, so it should come as no surprise that Google would like to sell streaming videos online. The problem of course is that even if the newest TV shows and movies were offered without commercials and at the same time as on iTunes or Amazon On Demand, streaming just doesn't seem worth as much as a downloadable file. And since the studios really don't like to give anyone any additional leverage in content negotiations, it would be hard for Google to offer the same content, in a less portable way, for a lower price. Of course the real answer is to offer rentals, but for some reasons only Netflix has been successful in acquiring a license to stream the latest TV Shows in HD on a subscription basis. But Google is bigger than Netflix and since Youtube streams far more content than anyone else on the web (10.5 Billion views in October vs second place Hulu at 856 Million according to comScore) the company might just find a way to leverage its position to bring us a new way to catch our favorite show.

We first saw the Cisco FlipShare TV hit the FCC just over a month ago, and now that's it's official (well, official in the sense that Walt Mossberg broke the embargo by two hours) we're still sort of underwhelmed and a little befuddled -- although it's made by Cisco, the Flip-focused media player doesn't actually connect to your home WiFi network. Instead, the FlipShare software transmits data from your computer using a proprietary USB dongle, which means the player itself is useless unless your computer is on with Flip's funky FlipShare software running and the dongle connected. Flip tells us the decision to go proprietary was made to make things easier for non-technical users to set up (like Flip's cameras, the FlipShare software is preloaded on the dongle) but we can't help but think it's actually a bit more complicated, since Gran won't be able to just turn the thing on and subscribe to your new Flip user channels enabled by FlipShare 5.0. Instead, she'll have to get out her laptop, plug in the dongle, launch the software (which pulls the content from the internet), and then start using the FlipShare TV's RF remote to get at your videos, which seems pretty complicated to us. Yeah, we're just not sure, especially at $149 -- we've actually got one here for review, we'll let you know how we feel in the next couple days.

One of the natural side effects of being the largest maker of cellphones in the world is that you produce a lot of different models -- a lot -- which makes it way too easy for product planning, engineering, and marketing to all have corners cut for even the most important devices in the herd. Nokia seems to be coming to terms with that, though, announcing that it'll scale back from "around 20" smartphones released this year to roughly a half of that in 2010, allowing it to give each phone the TLC it so desperately needs. Interestingly, the company says that it's looking to the low- to midrange smartphone realm as a hot new competitive frontier -- and an area where it'll "have tools to play offence [sic] as well as defense," possibly thanks to its continued involvement in Symbian even as it looks to Maemo to grow the high end. By any measure, it sounds like Nokia's starting to get the hint -- but it's still anyone's guess what kinds of products will ultimately see out of these guys over the next 12 to 18 months.

We already knew that a potent Marvell chip was under the hood of Spring Design's Alex, but at long last the mystery surrounding the powerhouse within Entourage's Edge is no more. The Armada PXA168 processor will be responsible for steering the world's first "Dualbook" through the stormy seas that'll be created once crazed consumers get ahold of this thing, and while we've no idea if the software will actually support this laundry list of capabilities, the chip should have no issue with "full-featured web browsing, multi-format video and image processing." More specifically, we're informed that "HD-quality video and 3D graphics" will be supported, which could obviously lead to some pretty interesting applications (you know, like actual web surfing on an e-reader). Of course, you won't get anything close to those speeds in the States -- but hey, you can't drive a Lambo 180 miles per hour on a public street, either.

Dubbed the 'Cookie' it's, "an affordable touchscreen phone", for those who don't feel like shelling out for an iPhone/Bold/5800/Touch Diamond. At £159 with £10 credit on O2 PAYG, it won't break the bank but it still manages a 3in touchscreen, 3mp camera, FM radio and all the usual gubbins. Don't go looking for 3G, Wi-Fi or GPS, though, because they're not there. More details and the press release after the cut.

The user interface is similar to HTC's TouchFlo , with a collection of widgets on offer including an on-screen clock and memo pad. It also manages handwriting recognition. If you're more of a thumb-typer, there's also an on-screen keyboard that pops up automatically when the phone's turned, thanks to the built-on motion sensor. It'll be available from next month from Carphone Warehouse , just in time for Xmas.

battery life suffer with Window 7

There’s every chance that you’re reading Mobile Computer on a netbook running Windows 7 by now — if so, has your battery life been adversely affected by the new operating system?

jkOnTheRun certainly thinks so and it’s been running some tests to see how Windows 7 compares to the previous netbook operating system of choice, Windows XP.

Using BatteryEater Pro’s demanding Classic test (which hammers the processor and GPU non-stop), and with screen brightness at 40% and all power-saving features disabled (which is much the same as the configuration we use for battery testing), jkOnTheRun found that a Toshiba NB205 netbook ran for five hours and 50 minutes with Windows XP — Windows 7 lasted for five hours and 15 minutes.

That seems like pretty good going to us, but here are apparently reports of Windows 7 actually lasting for longer than Windows XP on some netbooks. The only explanation for this can lie with the drivers and while most netbook manufacturers have no released Windows 7 updates for their models, some may still need to be perfected — particularly when it comes to energy efficiency.

If you’ve upgraded your netbook to Windows 7, grab BatteryEater Pro (it’s free) and try the Classic test for yourself. You’ll need to mess with Windows’ Power Settings to disable all the power-saving features (sleep, screen save, hard disk spin-down, etc), but this only takes a couple of minutes.

ASUS to launch an ebook reader early in 2010

The news comes from the Taiwan Economic News, who reports that ASUS is readying a device with built-in 3G, Wi-Fi and WiMAX for trial in Taiwan over the next couple of months, before launching in Europe and the US in the first half of 2010.

ASUS executives have apparently stated that the ebook reader will be priced to compete with the Amazon Kindle and Sony’s Reader device and “industry insiders” reckon that it will have a 9” screen.

It’ll be interesting to see what ASUS comes up with for an ebook reader, particularly one with a 9” screen — that’s a similar scale to the Amazon Kindle DX, which sells for $489 (around £300) in the US. There’s very little to distinguish ebook reader hardware at the moment — the grey e-ink screens are all much the same, with only rate of page refresh differing between models, and no one seems to have hit upon a successful design (although the Barnes & Noble Nook may be the first).

Hardware is only one part of the problem, of course, and format support is a more pressing issue for any ebook reader. If ASUS offers full support for a wide range of proprietary and open ebook formats — and can strike a deal with mobile operators and booksellers for an effective distribution mechanism — then it might just have something to offer.

First of all, as you can see in the pictures in this post, there’s not much you won’t like about this Acer, except perhaps the glossy screen and case.
